Even the youngest children know that Earth is running short on trees. The price of paper continues to rise and airborne toxins, once absorbed by our rainforests, are now lingering in greater quantities in our atmosphere. So, what's a treehugger to do? Save paper!

  1. Start by reading Junk Mail Got Ya Down? You really do have many options for cutting back on the junk mail.
  2. Bag the bag lunch; switch to garbage free, reusable lunch boxes.
  3. Consider your options on thank you notes--admittedly not a big tree saver, but I'm just sayin'!
  4. Learn more at Treehugger.
  5. When you have a choice, choose products with less paperboard packaging, for less to be recycled or thrown away. Need help deciding? Read this.
  6. I probably don't need to remind you about reusable shopping bags; they are everywhere today, and that's actually a good thing. Consider the material carefully. What is it made of and what are the environmental effects of its manufacture? Cleaning out your closet to find all those gifted tote bags you tucked away for a rainy day is probably your best and most economical implementation for this idea.
  7. Switch to cloth napkins.
  8. Choose paper towels and toilet paper made from post-consumer recycled paper. Consciously consider the amounts you use, placing particular attention on using cloth rags/towels for as many jobs as possible.
  9. Printer paper for your computer has 2 sides. Use them!
  10. Recycle all paper that is possible in your area. It will be used to create the boxes that many of your food purchases are packaged in--a far better solution than deforestation.

In my recent efforts to promote a greener way of life I've stumbled upon a great up and coming eco-friendly school and office supply company called O'BON. The pencils are made of newspaper and the notebooks are made of a sugarcane based pulp called bagasse. Here are some of my favorite pencils from O'BON http://www.myobon.com/product/wildlife-color-pencil-pack
