My New Toy Saves Half the Energy
of Conventional Ovens
Okay. I'll admit it. I'm an empty-nester. That's a tough thing for many women of my age to admit. It's a given that I'm over 40; that's as far as we go on topic. Moving along now--I want to share with you singles, couples, and empty-nesters my latest, greatest energy-saving kitchen gadget.
Like most American homeowners, I have the typical built in kitchen--stove/oven combination and a microwave. We all know that microwaves have their fans and their foes. But even their fans know that this appliance is not an equal opportunity food warmer. For many of our leftovers and 'doggie-bag' take homes from restaurants, the microwave turns them to rubber or mush.
The full size oven is our option, but costs a lot in energy to warm up one dish for lunch tomorrow. Yesteryear's toaster ovens had a tendency to turn these same dishes into rawhide before the insides got warm, so what's a budget-saving 'lunch-at-homer' to do?
The answer now is clear. Many models of today's toaster ovens come just a little over-sized and include the air-equalizing feature of convection cooking. Older toaster ovens were known for heating unevenly, but these newer models do a pretty good job of keeping the heat moving smoothly around the food.
Today it was my turn. I purchased one on sale yesterday, getting a great deal with an added coupon offer. That made hubby happy, and even more so when he learned how much it would help our electric bill.
My test run was a stuffed salmon fillet, and it was oh so yummy, and purrrr-fectly cooked! What's more is that convection cooking reduces time in the oven by an average of 30%. My healthy, omega fatty acid packed fish was ready in under 25 minutes, when it takes 35 minutes in a traditional, full-sized oven. Remember, that full sized oven also uses more power to heat its extra cubic footage, so you do the math. I saved a LOT of electricity on my lunch today, and that's just one meal. I'm planning on noticing the difference in my next electric bill. Anyone got a highlighter?
