Today was a truly amazing example of the miracles that can occur through social networking. It wasn't more than about a year ago that I entered Facebook for the first time--a little hesitantly, I'll admit. I did not want to give up my privacy, but I did want to find old friends and play catch up with family more easily. More on Facebook below.
Shortly after getting Facebook going, I just had to see what all the flurry was with Twitter. There I was able to connect with some contacts I might never have managed through Facebook, simply because of the differences in how they work. That said, I have found Twitter to be a successful tool for getting the word out to followers about new posts. I have seen my followers grow steadily since I started to Tweet. Facebook started out to be a way to connect with family and friends, and I was immensely impressed with their friend finder feature. I caught up with lots of college roommates, high school classmates, former co-workers, old bosses and tons of family all over the country. That has been lots of fun.
New Kid on the Green Block and Organic Journey Online have yet to see the extreme benefit through Facebook that I have enjoyed at Twitter. Perhaps you'd like to help me change that. If you visit my Facebook page, you can become a fan and follow my wall posts. What's the benefit for you? You won't miss many posts, for starters. I generally put up a "commercial" on the Facebook page to let friends know what's new on the blog. Let me know what you think; is this helpful to you?
I'll close by telling you a story about my coolest Facebook experience yet--just this week: Some years ago I shared a story of my Girl Scout days with my kids. As a part of this, they learned my nickname, given to me by my best friend at Girl Scout Camp. They have never ceased teasing me about it. No, I'm not going to share it with you, so don't even ask!
Anyway, I've thought about and often wondered where that old friend landed. Facebook's friend finder doesn't have a connection locater for 'Girl Scout buddies', but here's the truly amazing thing it can do. A few days ago, I received an email asking me to be Facebook friends with someone who had this same friend's name. "Could it be her?", I wondered.
It was! You might ask how she found me. This is the really cool part. My college roommate, who transferred to my school during my junior year, had been HER college roommate at another school before transferring. They are friends on Facebook.
When commenting on my roommate's Facebook page, my Girl Scout friend saw my name there. She remembered me and sent a friend request. The rest is history, as they say. We are doing a lot of catching up via the Internet. Although we are no longer near one another, Facebook makes it easy for us to keep in touch.
Yes, we've already reminisced about our silly nicknames and discovered our husbands are distantly related. Nothing short of amazing!
If you are not already using the greenest way to find old friends and keep up with family, you're missing the boat. Jump on board and find out what your old friends are up to. It won't cost you a dime, and that is truly green.
